REVEALING TINY CREATURES

A talk by science illustrator Geoff Thompson

Geoff began illustrating insects by hand in 1975, going on to work at Queensland Museum for over 42 years. He will explore scientific images old and new. As a printmaker and scientific illustrator, he will share insights into treasures of Queensland Museum’s fabulous library and reveal traditional techniques he once used to illustrate new species.

Queensland Museum’s current imaging system can move a 50-megapixel camera in steps as small as a micron and combine the sharp pixels from up to 800 images into one sharp image, revealing stunning details of tiny specimens in full colour at staggering magnifications. With co-photographer Lily Kumpe, over 100 such images were recently produced for the Queensland Museum’s popular exhibition “Insect Agency”. Geoff will share some of the techniques used to produce these and many other amazing images.
